Default p/s control valve

I have a 66 mustang with p/s and looks like I'm probably going to end up keeping the stock setup (was thinking of rack and pinion). If I keep my stock setup it will need to be updated. What is the verdict on the p/s control valve. I've seen where you can purchase new or rebuilt units. Can anyone tell me if there is a significant advantage of new over the rebuilt units? The price difference is a couple hundred bucks... Would like to keep that money if it's not necessary to spend it.

Yeh...I chased my tail for a while when I replaced all the steering components and did not have power in my power steering. After replacing the pump and ram, I discovered my brand new rebuilt valve was not done right. Put a new one on and no problems since. Get a new one or rebuilt it yourself.

Default Rebuild or replace

A properly rebuilt original unit is much better than the new repros.

If you go with a new unit, buy a Stainless Steel Brakes piece. They have runs of them that have caused problems, but at least they are built like the OEM parts.

The Flaming River units from Argentina are really bad. Lots of those never work right and they are not made like the original units, so they are not considered rebuildable.

Thanks very much for the info. Chockostang, do you have rebuilt 6 cylinder bendix units? I have my old one I can send as a core. How much do those run with a core? Do you also have 6 cylinder p/s steering tie rods?

I used Precision Products out of Texas to rebuild my control valve and cylinder. It was not very expensive but took him a couple of weeks to get it back to me. Here is their website:
