changed headgaskets now I'm burning oil
Hi all,
I had the car overheat. I was burning water and water was getting into the oil. the oil whas nearly white when I changed the headgaskets.
I cleaned and flushed the engine with new filter and new oil
The water problem seems fixed now. No more whiteish in oil but it still smokes.
Now I found that I burn a LOT of oil. 10mile trip was about a litre .... :-(
I don't know what to do with that car anymore.
I'm going back to the pit and check compression as well as retorquing the head bolts.
Any ideas on what might be wrong?
it smokes a lot in idle and it seems to completely disappear when I rev. The engine sounds happy and revs crisp and happy. once i get back to idle from revs soon later I get that smoke again ....
i'm pissed

just changed oil 2 or 3 times to get rid of the white gunk. it's all gone now. oil is perect color. but it just disappears. i had it idle for 15minutes and that seems to take a quarter of a litre. lots of smoke.
Problem ssems to worsen

here's one picture of the spark plugs and compression values.
compression was up at 110-120 at first stroke. final numbers under the plug.
left to right is cyl #1 to #8
all values measured cold engine, open throttle. unfortunately i didn't check on warm (didn't want to burn another quart of that stuff)
another picture of the car from back after 3 minutes from cold.
any ideas?
PS: it was that smokey before I changed the gaskets. I thought it was me burnig water as the oil was all white. but the oil is fine now with the same smoke as before

i used the order of the weiand manual (weiand 8124 action plus). but i didn't start with something like 10ftlbs then 12 then 15 and so on
i went around in the sequence very slowly. did it aroudn 5 times until I had it hand tight. then another 2 or 3 times the sequence so I had them torqued to around 28ft-lbs if i remember right.
firends of mine speculate piston rings :-(
i coouldn't even tell for the moment. Is there even an oil channel involved in intake?

if the spark plugs were my problem I'd be laughing :-) I took a picture of valve seals, but I couldn't see a lot. there was a nice rubber thing at #5 cylinder that looked as if it would be happy there. I couldn't tell as I can't really see there and no experience. but they are not porous.
do you lads think I should measure compression again with engine warm or do numbers indicate pistons ok.
will I have to do a leakdown test ?

Yeah, rings would show up on the compression test. Has to be valve seals or intake.
If you overtorque an aluminum intake you can warp it, causing the lower portion of the intake to lose seal and suck oil out of the lifter valley. However, the vacuum leak causes the engine to run crappy as well.

Intakes are a PITA.
I did lots of percautions and followed eveyones advice on here...All of which was good...When it was all said and done It ended up leaking oil from behind the dizzy...and continues to leak oil as we speak...Fear not...once I get pinion angle dialed ill be back for its ***!
I torqued bolts to 18 Ftlbs on Aluminum edelbrock performer 289 folowing their sequence and torque numbers of course..Sigh.
Maybe you should just try again? Though I cant say if its the intake or the heads that are the issue..
