Default wheel width in 66

I'm looking at getting some new rims that are 14x7 and was wondering if the width will fit and if so how tight it will be. I think the rims have somewhere between 4-4.5" of backspace. Thanks for your help.

You may want to consider 15x7. Cost isn't much more, and you have many more tire choices. They make all the classic wheel styles too.

Thanks for your help. Looking at the dodgestang site though has made me realize 15" rims I think will be too big. I plan on doing a shelby drop, but running 7 inch wide rims all around like P185, maybe P195. One reason I am concerned is that I also want to use a piece that will convert my 4 lug wheels to 5 lug wheels. This unfortunately will add 2" of backspace and I do not want any rubbing. I don't plan on lowering my springs at all. Anyone have any thoughts or ideas about this?

You want to run a minimum of 205 on a 7 inch rim. I have 195s on my 14x4s.

Here you go:

This is my 67 I6 coupe with original suspension and shelby drop. Has 16x7 pony rims with P205/60R16s up front and P235/60ZR16 in the rear. I rolled my fenders to make them stop cutting the rears. I used a 1" adapter that made my 4x4.5 bolt pattern the fox body pattern which is 4x4.25. This allows me to run fox body rims.

Here are what my adapters look like on the drum.

EDIT: Give me a decent picture of your mustang(prefer side shot if possible) and some ideas for wheels you want and I can chop them for you.

With 7" wide wheels you are going to need about 4 - 4.25 backspace. The spacers will change the amount of backspace that you will need. Just add the width of the spacer to 4 - 4.25 inches (spacers aren't the safest thing in the world to use though).

lunarweasel is right about tire choices of 14 to 15s. To use 15" wheels just use lower profile tires. A 185/70-14 tire is the same height as a 195/60-15

I have 16 X 7 with 4.25 backspace on 205 55s and no rubbing.

I wish you luck on finding a 15x7 wheel (well any 7 inch wide for that matter) with 6.25 inches of backspacing which is what you would need to fit the wheel properly if you are using a 2 inch thick adapter. I doubt you could even custom order wheels in that size.

With an adapter of that size the only off the shelf wheels I can think of that would work in your application would be 17x8 for 2008 mustangs because they require close to 2 inch thick adapter to work on a classic IIRC.

Why don't you want to convert the car to 5 lug the correct way?

I didn't want to go thru the hassle of switching out the rear end and switching out so much of the front suspension to match the 5 lug wheels. I may just keep my stock wheels. I do like those chrome covers with the styled 65/66 design but they are expensive. Not as expensive as the adapters, new rims and rolling the fenders though I guess...
