What Is It & What Does It Do?
What's the round gizmo with the hole in the center just up and to the right of the throttle linkage? What does it do? It's not on the parts diagram from Ponycarbs and it's not in the Chilton diagram either.
Can't see it well enough to tell if it's got a wire connected to it or not. If it does, I'd suspect it's an anti-dieseling solenoid (lets the engine shut off instead of running on very roughly after you've removed the key from the ignition). If not, a dashpot to slow the rate of throttle closing (reduces HC spike). IIRC, both were early emissions-related pieces.

It looks to be a dashpot, like Norm said. Not sure what a HC spike is though. Need help with that one.
I thought it helped automatic cars from stalling from sudden throttle closures and the torque converter allowing the rpms to drop quickly.

Norm, excellent information. As I said above, I thought the dashpots were for autos, but I cannot argue with your information. Good to know.
67fire, I thought about that, but the power valve in a Holley is on the metering block submerged in fuel and covered by the fuel bowl. This is on the outside of the carb.
Any idea what kind of carb this is?
