6x9 speakers in a 73 coupe problem solved
Hey,
Bought some 6x9 speakers to replace the 6x9's I've had since 1982 (high school for me). The old 6x9's were a little oddly shaped, and just barely fit in the package tray. I apparently got lucky with them. I had a shop install them back then.
Now I'm restoring the coupe and wanted to update the sound system and get some new speakers (the old ones were trashed by time and Led Zepplin).
Problem is, new 6x9's don't fit. And, there isn't anyone out there making a resto-mod package tray with pods for 6x9's that fit a 71 to 73 coupe. I did talk to some nice people at MP products about it, and they may be looking into making something in the future.
But, I'm stuck for now.
I was about to go buy some 5x7's when a thought struck me. I made a masonite panel that fit's closely to the existing interior pieces, but provides a slanted deck from the bottom of the read window rubber to just behind the rear seats. My 6x9's fit! See the photos.
Only problem now is paint, which I need anyway. Where can I get interior paint that actually matches my interior. I bought some med blue stuff from some on line place (Calif mustang I think) and it was too light and metallic. I haven't seen anything but this paint offered anyplace.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
John

i would make some "rings" to angle the speaker and cover it is fleece.Mix up some resin, glass it all, sand, smooth, and cover in vynil, of depending on how smooth you make it, paint it body color..............done
dont paint masonite, the paint will soak in and flatten out, if you have to, leave it flat and wrap in vynil.

That is a tight fit. These cars weren't designed to have these complex sound systems in them like we want, so you do have to get creative to make it look "natural" or like it was supposed to be there. The more stuff you can hide, the better. I would do something like Iskwerm suggested.
I plan to seal the masonite. After that I'll either paint it or use vinyl.
As for the setup, the angled panel I made allows the speakers to fit perfectly. And it looks very nice on the two edges against the existing panel pieces. Looks like it should have been that way in the first place.
Underneath the panel I made angled shims that support the panel all the way across. I plan to use the silver bubble stuff to insulate the air gap underneath.
All in all, I'm very happy with what I made.
