Default Installing AC in my 66?

Hey guys I have a 66 that did not have factory AC. Wanted to know how difficult it is to install an AC. Will have my mechanic do it but before I ask wanted to know if its worth it and level of difficulty? I see units from $1500 and up and I live in Houston so it will get bad here in summer. I talk to another mechanic and he try to convince me out of it. So wanted the forums opinion. Thanks!

If you are going for originality it will mess that up. If you don't mind it not being original then add A/C. It is not terribly hard to install, any mechanic should be able to.

Im here in Houston too, I know what your talking about.

Vintage Air make some good systems. A few member have them here. I believe they are around $1000.

I'm in Houston, too. You will definitely need the AC in the summer months (which for those familiar with the area starts in March and extends till October).

I've got all the makings of a stock system, but a non-Ford evaporator unit. I've thought about the vintage air type systems just for appearances if nothing else. I'll decide after I get her on the road......

I'm going with Vintage Air. I have an original non-A/C console, and don't want to cut, replace, or get rid of it just to have A/C. The small under dash vents blend in very well, and are more factory looking than the factory unit IMO.

If it were my car and originality was at all important, I'd install the AC but use original type evap section (underdash) and compressor. Works well and the parts are out there even if they cost a bit more. Keeps the looks original. Then again that may not matter to you.

why have your mechanic do it? AC work is really easy all you need the mechanic for is to vacuum the system after assembly and to charge it up for you
