Smile Opinions on Upgrades

In my quest in restoring my 1967 Mustang daily driver, I'm tempted to explore the world of after market items like four wheel disc brakes, power steering, coil over shocks, ect, ect, ect. Just wondering if any of these modifications are really worth the money on a daily driving non-racing coupe. Thanks for y'alls opinions.

On a DD the best money spent is a disk brake upgrade. Hands down. If you have 4 wheel drum your asking for trouble.

I think every one here would recommend disk brakes for safety and reliability. For fuel economy you may consider a T5 swap but that depends on your current set up and driving habits. power steering is just a matter of choice ( im staying manual for now). There are so many things you can do to make your car more enjoyable, depends on budget and skill level. for my project (not a DD/racer or show) i have (or will be) changed the wiring harness (ron Fransis), T5 swap, Granada disks, rebuilt stock front and rear suspention, mini tac and of cource New interior, paint (next week), replacing all crome/SS, new lights and replacing all exterior seals gasgets ect..

as you can see it depends on time, buget and your plan.

For a DD type car the first thing I would do would be install LED tail lights, the next thing would be get more modern seat belts (i.e. 3 point belts all around) and convert to disc brakes at least on the front if not all four wheels.

For a DD, I would find a way to get some headrest seats in there. Not only are some of the direct bolt in replacements supposedly more comfortable, but they will save your neck in a wreck. LEDs. Three point belts. Front disc brakes (four wheel disc may be overkill). Not everyone would go this far, but I would drop in a collapsible steering column if money wasn't an issue. I would rebuild the front end at least with new stock type components.

As you can tell, Im all about safety if I were to be driving it that much.

Brakes are very important for a DD, or it is just a matter of time before you crash into someone or something. Manual disc brakes are not bad if you are used to them. If you are like me and jump back and forth between vehicles, they can be a little un-nerving if you forget. Front discs are a must, rear wheels disc would be nice, and a power booster make things a little easier.

Now power steering on a DD might be a must depending on what town you live in. In the Texas hill country, MS would not be bad, but in Houston it was be a suck.

A/C is a must in Texas for me. That was a major criteria when I was looking for cars, but it is not so important in many areas of the country. Kinda up to you and how much you sweet .

I am a big fan of DynaMat and DynaPad. I would think this is a must for a DD. It keeps the cab warmer in the winter, cooler in the summer, and quieter.

The headlight relay mod and LED taillights are nice and more safe. I would put those on the bottom of my list or for when I do not want a big project. You can knock both of those out in 2 hours.

Tranny swaps and EFI...I am not a big fan of OD trannys (T5 or AOD) and EFI in classics, but I am a little jaded on this topic though. The important thing is that you do what you want to do in this area.

Mine will not be a DD but I will say I want it to drive well and be enjoyable.

Having said that I will tell you I have already done full disc brakes all around with a power boosted master cylinder. I have a AOD (not by choice, I wish it was a standard). I got the rest of my Dynamat Extreme last night from my part-time job. The LED taillights are on my list, and I plan on putting in a Rack and Pinion Steering to help with a sportier feel when driving. I did have seatbelts added to my car.

I do plan on upgrading that to 3 way seatbelts and aftermarket seats, and an aftermarket stereo for cruising fun. I do have plans to upgrade to a coilover system eventually but that is when money allows.

Good luck with your plans and enjoy it when you can.

absolutely agree on the brake upgrade, for the money, it's one of the best improvements. Next, what's not mentioned here, and is relatively inexpensive, upgrade your radiator and add a shroud. Early stangs were known for over heating in start/stop driving. A four core and shroud is aprox $200-250. Again, worth every penny.
Then look at your suspension, the parts are not that much, but labor intensive to replace. Good luck
