Default power steering problem

Hey everybody, I've been working out of town the last couple of weeks so the weekends have a mad rush to make at least some foreward progress on the mustang lol. I've put new bushings and a new dust boot on the end of the pwr steering cylinder, I put new sway bar end links and bushings on, a new idler arm, and new strut rod bushings. The old power steering pump leaked so I took the belt off of it and drove without it. The system worked fine during the leak, but I got tired of always having all the fluid constantly leaking. I've put a new power steering pump & resevoir on along with a new pressure hose and a return hose. I also replaced the two small hoses that go from the control valve to the cylinder. After I got finished, I started it up and let it warm up a few minutes and as soon as I touched the steering wheel, It started going crazy. It jerks violently back and forth to the right and left about a quarter turn each direction. I checked to make sure the fluid level was good and it showed fine on the dipstick.
Anyone have any ideas what could be causing the jerking?

did you flip-flop hoses on the power steering cylinder by accident, or the control valve?

The hoses are on the same way as the old ones were were when I took em off as far as I can tell.
How would I bleed the air out of the system?

I tried putting a new control valve on it and it still does the same thing. I'm lost... Anyone have any suggestions?

I think snorulz nailed it. If the hoses are on backward, the steering wheel will jerk violently back and forth ... or so I read when I was re-doing mine years ago. It warned about not reaching through the wheel to start it up the first time so you don't get hurt if you have it backward.

As for air in the line, it will groan if there is any.

Double check your hose routing!

What do you think he has reveresed, the two long hoses or the short ones from the p/s cylinder to the control valve?

I ask, as I purchased a new control valve and ps cylinder from Chocko and don't want to screw it up?

The short hoses are backwards (PS Valve to PS Cylinder). It happens all the time and is a common sign that you swapped the left and right hoses on the cylinder side. Basically when you turn right, the valve is send fluid for the cylinder to go right, but the hose is plumbed to so that it actually goes left. Thus the violent back and forth action!

Yea, you have the two short hoses cross-mounted - http://www.stangerssite.com/shorthoses.html

I just did the power steering on my 68. same problem, it was the twp short hoses were switched. as is you needed anyone else to repeat the same thing. switched them back and everything worked fine. however be carefull as you can break your wrist by putting you hand in the wheel while it is jerking. also the jerking can damage the power valve. Hope this helps.
