Default HIPO Camshaft.

I just got my NPD catalog in the mail today and I'm looking for some opinions. They show a Camshaft that they say is a hydraulic version of the HIPO Ford PN #C90Z-6250-C camshaft.

It says that it has 289 degrees of duration and 460 lift.

I picked this same camshaft up off a table at a swap meet last year CHEAP !!! It was kind of a snap buy. But it was only $80.00. I decided later I wasn’t going to use it as I was going to go with aluminum heads, Thumper Cam and a stroker kit all on a roller 5.0 block I have in the garage.

Because of monetary constraints ,for at least this year, I'm thinking of using this cam. Sticking with my current cast iron heads with new lifters, push rods, new valve springs, roller tip rockers and screw in studs. I can get the heads drilled and tapped for nothing and do some port matching and blending myself (Nothing radical).

All told I figure I can get it in and set up, doing 99% of the labor myself, for under $400.

So my question is does anyone feel this would be an absolute BAD idea ? I'm not looking for 400 HP. Just a little more pep as it is just a weekend stoplight to stoplight driver.

Any comments are welcome.

For a driver car? Sure, it's a great cam. It's designed more for road racing than drag racing, so it works great on the street. The one thing I might recommend is swapping to some 1.7 rockers. Make sure, of course, you'll have valve clearance with them. Assuming you do, it'll up the lift to give you a little more power.

I'd get 1.7's for the exhaust and leave 1.6's on the intakes to try and achieve a "dual pattern" setup.

hell, if you bought a set of crane 1.7 energizer's i'd consider chipping in for half of them.

Hmm, maybe 1.7's are pushing it on the intake. I like my77's idea of putting them on the exhaust only.

Kalli, that's just what ford calls it. It was basically their over the counter performance cam for the guys who wanted K code performance out of their 289/302. It works pretty much without any other modifications. If they were to drop a hyraulic cam with the same specs as the solid lifter K code cam into an A code motor, you'd be floating valves and pulling up press-in studs.

iirc the factory 5.0 HO roller is close to the 289 Hipos specs. if your gonna use a roller block go with the roller cam. you can buy a ford letter cam ex: b303 used for about 50$ and be golden

I plan on sticking this in my current 289 for this summer. The 5.0 roller I have is just a bare block that I bought for $50. I dont want to spend the coin this year building a stroker like I had planned. I just want to wake up the motor thats in there right now.

Taking Tad's advice and about the rockers (thank you sir ) and what I have found elsewhere if I add this cam and the proper parts to support it I should be "OK" with it on the street. Not quite ACME rocket sled but also not a total dog either.
