Best street tire for traction
Thanks for the replys.
Looks like i will probably go 16x7 in front & 16x8 in back (or maybe 17" but I like 16" a little better). Torq Thrust's (either II's or D's).
Probably 205 in front and 225 (or 235) if possible in back.
Looks like most people like the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's & the BFG KDW's so will probably get one of those. They are probably pretty similar in performance. A huge step up from my current Delta 195/70-14's that will spin on the 1-2 shift on a mild motor.
Now I just got to find the best deal on them.
Tire rack will be about $1500, hope I can do better than that.

Tire rack is $1667 for 4 16x7 & 4 goodyears
$1551 with the BFG KDW's.
$900 of that is for the wheels. I can get the rims about $100 cheaper on Ebay but then I would have to pay for mounting so it would be about the same.

Whats wrong with the BFG TAs and the Cooper Cobras?
I have had the BFG TA tires on a couple of vehicles and now on my 65. My Stang isn't running right now so I don't know how well they perform on it. However I have them on my 95 F150 and it does well at higher speeds and cornering and in the rain.
My friend had Cooper Cobra tires on an early 90's 454SS Chevy truck and they were pretty good.
I will agree that these tires are not the best, but there is much worse. They are not very expensive either.

I guarantee you that those tires don't do 'well'
I have them on my '67, and I used to sell tires for a living. They suck for performance use. It's an old, old tire design, and it shows. They have a soft, flexible sidewall, the tread design is horrible (especially for wet weather), and the tread compound is cheap and hard. They look great, but performance is far, far below anything a modern tire can provide. Yes, there are worse tires, but I don't buy off-brand tires, and don't recommend anyone else does either.
It's been raining here for the last week and a half, and I have to let the clutch out at about 1k rpm (my cam doesn't make noticable power until 2500) to keep my tire from spinning. They'll turn a little in the rain, but I often find myself skittering around the road while changing lanes on the freeway, and understeer is the word of the day when trying to make tight turns.

As far as wet-weather behavior is concerned, I've been very pleasantly surprised by how well Falken Azenis RT-615's perform. It's kind of a "Street Touring" autocross tire with better grip than most typical pure street tires at a cost of somewhat shorter life. Then again, at ~2000 miles/year I wouldn't worry too awfully much about tread wear rates. Some folks have gotten 15,000 mostly street with occasional auto-X miles from them, though the best of their grip was long gone by that point. They aren't all that pricy, either.
That tire was the hot setup about three years ago and even better "ST" tires are now available, so it might be worth looking at some of the tire threads in the Street Touring forum over at SCCAForums.com. More $$$ than Azenis, though.
Edit - Azenis come in 225/50-16, 225/45-17, 245/45-17, 255/40-17, 275/40-17. http://www.falkentire.com/xhtml/tire...egory=2&tire=2

You can run 255/50/16 drag radial. My buddy has the BFG's on his 66' and the car sees weekly miles. They arent the best in rain and it seems that everybody that hates them in rain drives like a a$$ and doent change their driving habits. He hasnt had any problem and has been able to get 1.6X 60 foots at the track on a stock type suspension
lol....well, I don't drive like an ***, hehe:P I just don't like having that little traction in the dry, let alone the rain. It's not as bad as driving on bald tires, but it's not much better. Like I said, I skip across lanes on the freeway in the rain. Wind + rain makes driving on the freeway flat scary. My aggressive cam doesn't help off the line traction. I drive pretty conservatively around town, and even still I have to change my driving habits in the rain to keep the car on the road.
If you've ever driven a car with directional tread design tires, you understand what a huge difference modern tires make in wet weather.
