Default what should buy/upgrade

Hi guys havent posted in awhile kind of depressed since my stang is gone over the winter :/....just had a b-day though and got some b-day money now giving me about 700 dollars to spend. Was planning on buying a new carb fuel intake because i have the stock 2-barrel at the moment....Just got the car late last summer and my first car and im very interested in "playing around with it". The carb is kind of shot so ill have to rebuild that no matter what im throwing money into it. Would that be the best thing to get?...If i were to get the carb/intake setup do i want 650cfm carb....what kind of rpm range do i want on the manifold?

An Edelbrock performer and a Holley 600 would work fine if you have a stock small block. 650 is too big for a stock 289 with unported heads.

haha ya i was thinking about getting headers because i got manifolds and there rusted out (like they should be after 45 years!) but you have to replace the whole exhaust system correct?

Believe it or not, unless you run your motor over 6000 rpms regularly, your best bet for that motor is a fresh 2 barrel. Check out PonyCarbs.

I want the 4 barrel though cuz i know its gonna kill gas mileage but it makes it faster and its a fairly large horespower gain

Why do you think that a 4 barrel will make it faster and large hp gain? Overcarburating the motor will produce LESS horsepower, not more. If you were doing internal mods such as different heads, bigger valves, boring/stroking, changing the cam, then yes, a 4bbl would be the way to go. But you will learn, as we all have over the last 45 years, that simply throwing headers and a 4bbl on a stock 2bbl 289 just leads to headaches.

sorry to burst your bubble.

i would hardly call a 500cfm 4 barrel "overcarbuerated" on the stockest of the stock 289s

a 450 to 470cfm is enough for a stock 289 james is right too big of a carb will make you lose power and pump out a lot of unburnt gas.The heads on the 2 barrel 289 don't flow enough for a 600cfm carb.
