Thumbs up Ignition System

I am looking at picking up a new ignition system, mainly because my car didn't come with one. what do I need to properly run a MSD setup? I am looking at the entire system, from battery to starter.

If you are replacing the distributor also, get an MSD distributor with a magnetic trigger, 6series MSD box, and Blaster 2 coil. Use the mag trigger (green and purple) wires to trigger the box and you can then use the white wire as an anti-theft by runing it to a hidden toggle switch with the other side to ground. When the wire is grounded, the box will not fire.

If you are using your existing distributor, use the white wire in the MSD box as the trigger from the distributor. Here are the MSD instructions. Use the diagrams in the back to plan your system. There are many options:

Yes I will be running an MSD dist. I will plan on getting one with a magnetic trigger-What's that advantage of that and what does it do? Is it for anti theft? What about the ones with the vacuum advance? I was planning on the 6AL2 box but not sure what coil. Blaster 2 sounds good. So I don't need a starter solenoid? I assume that is not needed with the 6AL2 box and coil. I assume I will do something like on page 11. Those instructions are great!

Sorry for all the questions but I've never dealt with a ground up ignition system before.

You will still need your starter solenoid to power the starter during start up and where the + battery terminal connects is a great place to connect the heavy red wire from the MSD. The advantage of a magnetic pick up is simply no mechanical wear parts. The pick up can fail, but it is unusual and not a normal maintenance item.

For a street driven car, I would definitely use vacuum advance. It allows you to run more vacuum at cruise improving your gas mileage and when you step on the gas, the advance is reduced keeping you in the power curve with no detonation.

Assuming you have a 302 non-roller cam engine, I would use this one:

Yeah, I found it at their ebay store for 7195.00. I really like it, especially for the price.

So what about a voltage regulator. Do I need that?

Here's what I have so far:

1. MSD Box
2. MSD Blaster 2 coil
3. Starter solenoid
4. Battery Cable kit
5. Dist will come with motor
6. cut-off switch (more for anti-theft)
7. ????

Get an alternator that doesn't require a voltage regularator. Either a 3g or one-wire. I like one wire alternators and my brand of choice is Powermaster. I've used them on almost every project and never had a problem. Some people don't like them as they think their battery won't charge below about 1500 rpm. Not true. When you start the car, you have to get it to about 1500 one time and it will start charging and not stop below that rpm until you turn the car off. Anyway, here is one with a chrome case on my 66:

You don't need the voltage regulator and wiring is as simple as running an 8 guage wire to the + battery terminal on the solenoid. You will also need a starter and I would again go with a mini-starter from Powermaster. I'll give you part numbers if you need them.
