Default bang for the buck heads?

I'm looking to make some more power with my 289
it already has a 4160 600cfm carb, weiand 8011 intake, elect. ignition, long tubes, and a mild cam (not sure on specs)
so i figure next i'll buy heads for it..but looking around there are so many to choose from and i'm not really sure which ones to stay away from. what are some decent heads? (that are hopefully on the less expensive side of the market) i'm not really looking to get the best out there, just a decent upgrade from the stock heads
thanks!

gt40p's requires you to use special headers with them

there used to be a great site with all the info and it even gave peoples 1/4 times upgrading from stocker heads but the site is gone now

afr 165's. By the time you buy some gt-40's unless you can find some that are fresh from the machine shop and aren't using grab from a barrell parts you will be ahead with afr's.

don't you need to get different valve springs with afrs or like you have to do something else besides just install those complete heads?

Could add a set of Edelbrock Performer RPM heads complete/assembled for about 1200.00 new from summit, jegs, etc in natural aluminum or a bit more for polished. Cheaper then the AFRs however much better then the stock heads. I can see the GT40s being a cheaper alternative however as stated your more then likely have machine shop costs on top of it. Personally I'd rather the new product thats ready out-of-the-box for use.

I am hesitant to post this, as I do not want to hijack the thread, but I feel it may help him if he plans on a junkyard upgrade.

gt40 vs stock 351W heads, what is a better bolt on from the junkyard head for a 289?

GT40's. They use 351W port castings, but have smaller combustion chambers for decent compression. It's almost impossible to find small-chamber 351W heads in a junkyard anymore.
