Question Mini Starter Hook Up

My 65's 302 engine is being built. Although it is carbed it is based off of an early 90's 5.0. The shop is including a new mini starter. How do I hook up the high torque mini starter? Can I still use my starter solenoid or do I bypass it somehow?

Use your existing starter solenoid. Connect the heavy gauge power lead to the large left terminal on the solenoid (same one the + battery is connected to) and the other end to the large power lug on the starter. Connect the smaller gauge start control wire to the large right terminal on the solenoid (nothing else should be on this terminal) and the other end to the small control lug on the starter mounted solenoid. What this configuration does is use your existing solenoid to only switch the low current control signal to the solenoid on the starter. The high current lead is already energized due to the connection from the solenoid on the battery + side.

alternatively; you can hook the B+ terminal to the left as already described and instead of adding a wire to the right hand large terminal as described, just lengthen and move the wires on the S & I terminal of the starter relay to the S & I terminal of the starter solenoid.

It really boils down to how much of the original installation you want to keep.

Two wires go from your regular solenoid down to the mini starter. One carries the current and one fires the mini starter's solenoid from the first one. (yellow wire)

Thanks for the input guys. It will be a while yet until the engine is finished. I will keep this in mind when installing and hooking up the starter.
