Default Starter problems

Alright my car broke down a couple weeks ago and i'm still having problems with the starter. I've gone through 2 remanufactured ones, and got screeching on both, someone on here said they probably weren't engaging correctly. So i bought a new one and it still screeches although a bit intermittently. So what am i doing wrong here, it's a c4. Could it possibly be from a different year and have a different flywheel or something. How can I tell? Any help would be much appreciated.

The flywheel could be screwed up from damage done by a previous bad starter bendix / gear. If the flywheel is screwed up then every new starter will do this.

Its funny im having the same problem. Have you changed the flywheel? if not its most likely that you ruined the teeth. Go underneath the car and check to see if any of your teeth are damaged, if so simply replace it and you should be fine.

the teeth are still pretty good really, just a little shiny, i'm just wondering if i might have a 6 cyl. flywheel. is there a way to tell without dropping the tranny, man this is a pain in the ***. i was also wondering if i could just put a 6 cyl. starter on?

believe me i know its a pain in the butt, but don't worry im sure you can tackle the problem. Unless you check for the casting numbers i don't know if there is any other way to check, maybe someone else knows...

there are at least 2 different starters.when i bought one for my 4-speed i had the same trouble,it wasnt fully engaging the flywheel teeth.then i got one for an automatic and it worked fine.some of the part stores #'s are messed up so bring the starter in with you and compare the depth.there are short and long nosed starters.if your teeth are a little chewed on the engine side edge of the flywheel, get the long starter.

It's my understanding that a 6 cyl ringgear is built into the TC so you can't interchange a I6 and V8 flexplate. There was a post in here some months back about someone getting starters with the wrong tail housing on them and the ones they were getting were not dropping the gear far enough into the bellhousing to engage the ring gear. Their solution was to get the opposite trans configuration (manual instead of AT)

hmm i'll have to try the manual starter i guess, this new starter looks just like the old one i traded in except the bolt where you wire it up is just a bit higher on the starter
