Sloppy auto shift handle on a 65
The shifter on my 65 is really loose. I have been led to believe there is a bushing at fault and it can be replaced from above by removing the shifter housing. My shop manual has failed me on this one. Anyone know anything about this? I am not even sure what bushing to buy. NPD and other places show various types.
I got my bushings from CJ's, part # HW 614 $2.50.
I had to pull my center console
Jack her up and disconnect the linkage
Remove the shifter and housing from the inside
I think there were 4 screws holding it in
Whole thing took about an hour and fixed the problem

Thanks for sharing this information. My 65 auto shifter is very loose as well. So I'll try the same when I place my next order with cj.
Tomorrow I'm adding rear seat belts but just concerned how long they are which others have complained about. Maybe I should tie it in several knots in the part behind the seat!

Mine was sloppy side to side. If the bushing is 100% gone it may have enough room to do what you are saying. It's an easy and cheap fix and if it hasn't been been done your bushings are most likely shot. Spend an hour and see what it does.

Hereis an article I found from Mustang Monthly on this subject. My shifter lever was loose and all over the place. I was going to buy a new shifter lever($90.00) and I cringe at repro parts till someone told me to just replace the bushings. It's cheap & easy.
