I'm looking at purchasing another 66 Mustang from a seller in CT. I live in Florida and bought my first car and the title was included. The car I'm currently looking at comes with a Bill of Sale only and not title. I've seen many cars sold this way and I'm wondering if I need to re-apply for the title or is this just not necessary for a car of this age?

Sadly no. You will need a title to apply for registration in your state. I have purchased many cars with bills of sale and fortunately have had little hassle in obtaining a title later. If the seller of the car does not have the title, you will need to apply for a lost title. Your local DMV will be able to give you the specifics for what you will need to obtain said title. I am not sure how this works in other states, but I know for sure that you will need to apply for the lost title in order to register your vehicle. One piece of advice is that when you draw up the bill of sale, make it for the smallest reasonable amount possible. This will save you from paying a ridiculous amount of tax on the car when you go to register it. Also not dating the bill of sale is a nice trick too, as I know for my state there is a time limit in which you have to register the car before being charged. Again I know this to be true for my state only, I am not sure what the auto laws are in your state.

Title or bill of sale only depends your state most states want a title for every car no matter its age.Yeah the dmv can get you a title with the bill of sale or http://www.broadwaytitle.com/ will but its like 150 bucks i think.

 

There is a fare amount of selling that goes on with funny titles or lost titles. Many times, the title is a salvage title or the title has a lean against it...always beware of a lost title purchase. Before you buy it, you may ask the Florida or what ever state it is registered in DMV, to do a search by VIN to tell if you it has a clear title and what the status of it is.
