Default question about carb intake setup

wow havnt been on this site in ages....college makes life to busy. when did glen leave?

anywho...

i was thinking of giving my 66 289 a pep with intake and carb swap. searched on the forums a bit and faq's but didn't see anything (tho i guess everyone's question is different)

I was looking for a decent intake and carb set up that won't break the bank, can give good bump in power and wont be too restrictive if i do heads later.

i was thinking about going with a 600cfm holley street avenger (tho that is probably too big) and edelbrock air gap intake.

i've heard the basic autolite 4100 is just as good and cheaper. also i was also maybe the torker II seems up my alley as well. just kinda torn.

if you guys have any other good ideas too that will probably be taken into consideration.

thanks all!

On a stock engine, an intake and carb upgrade will not give you a noticable improvement and I would stay away from a single plane intake (Torker II). You really need to combine it with a cam upgrade at the same time. You'll have the intake off already and for a few more hours work, it is worth it. For a stock engine like yours, try this set up:

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...=128&N=700+115

It will be the best $800 you put into your car from a power perspective (I'm assuming you have stock heads). If the price seems high, start adding up the cost of the parts you will need for your intake and carb. Once you add everything up, you will realize how much more you are getting for slightly more money.

i swapped from autolite 2100 (2barrell) to a 570 street avenger and weiand 8124. the difference was huge from 3500 rpm on
that set above looks great, but I'd saty away from a 670 cfm carb on a 289. so if you have a 2 barrel still just intake and carb will do a difference. but yes if you add a cam that will be a wold apart again
the cam above might be a bit radical for an otherwise stock 289 that you don['t want to spin over 5500 as well I .don't know if a stock 289 head (springs) will cope with 5.2ish lift. i was thinking rather along the lines of comp cams 256 or 262(max and that might need a spring change as well).

You always have to check for coil spring bind and if required, here are the springs for another $75 (always a good idea to change them anyway):

Kalli, here are the cam specs:

Please post the results, before and after.

if your just going carb and intake on a stock motor i'd be looking at the wieand 8124 intake and a holley 600 (model 4160) for the best bang for the buck. slapping in a new bump stick will be a great increase for sure, if you end up sticking something in there i wouldn't go more than .475 with stock old springs.

well i knew a cam would be nice (i've always kinda been a fan of the original cam lol). i want a little pep but go for bigger gains later buy getting a cam and heads that go well togeather. for $800 that is not bad at all but right now its a bit much.

also when i do get the intake is their really any point in porting it a bit or would that be worthless since i still have the stock heads?

lastly, just for general knowledge. about when do i need to start thinking about upgrading other key parts ie: fuel pump, rear ends, internals. i dont know if their is any real guidelines for that. don't wanna start starvin the engine of engine or snap the rear end showing off (tho im pretty sure id have to be putting down big numbers for a new rear end)

weiand 8124 intake and get a road demon 525 carb, the carb flows about 600 cfm and has annular boosters which really help throttle response, low end and fuel economy. You can get reman demons on ebay for a good price, I have bought three so far an they have been perfect. Just my opinion but you cant get a better carb for the price, summit racing has a new carb out as well, it it a revised version of the holley 4010 which is very much like the old autolite 4100, I have run a 4010 in the past and on a mild combo they run great, the price is nice too.

why do they rate the 525 @ 525 if it flows 600? barry grant does make some nice carbs. i will say that after all my tinkering my next carb will be a proform with unlimited adjustability

also, LOL @ soaring..... can't believe he hasn't gotten banned everywhere else by now too.
