Post help???

hi im matt and im new.
i have a 71 coupe 302 2b
i have a few ??? about the timeing.
1- if the timeing is off will it mess up the eng.
2- how would i know if the timeing is off?
3- how do i fix my timing.
i have a more ??? if there is some one out there willing to help.

Welcome Matt!! ...need a timing light for starters!! ...too much engine timing can hurt the 302!

Definitely can hurt the engine, if it is off quite a bit. But just a little shouldn't hurt anything. It obviously would be best to set it properly. Good luck.

Advance at idle with the vacuum advance hose disconnected and plugged should be 8-10*. Total advance (w/hose still disconnected) should hit 30-36* by 3000rpm.

thanks guys
the thang is i dont know that much about it.
the eng. runs and its drivable, but when i hit the gas its almost like the air/fuel ratio is off. tought it might be the timing.

Very well could be, but you need to get yourself a timing light and check it.

I'd strongly recommend you fork the $40 for a factory service manual. It will tell you how to do pretty much anything to your car that you'll ever need to do, shy of body work, including checking the timing.

+1 on the timing light and the service manual best money you can spend for wrenching on your car
