when you don't know what the return spring is or where it goes then you don't have one :-)

it goes from the throttle linkage of carb to a bolt somewhere on the intake manifold (in the V8 versions). Let me check if i can find a pic. for your I6

Ok, I've figured out what it is, and I DON'T HAVE ONE
A pic would be helpful Kailli. Thanks. I'm gonna see if NAPA might have one. From what I can tell I might need the bracket as well. I'll get a pic of my engine where it should go for reference.

Ok Ignore the red circle.

You can see the spring at the end of the linkage above the date in the picture.

Ha, both my 302 and 200 had crappy springs stretched about five inches attached to whatever happens to be around. Still worked though.

You can also go to autozone.com and pull up an online repair manual for your car. They have great images you can print and use to reference if you don't have a shop manual yet.

Yeah thanks BA that's where I thought it would go. Where does the other end attach? manifold bolt?
I went to the local mustang yard and looked at a schematic, but it had the spring going from the bottom of the exhaust manifold where it meets the exhaust (there is an extra hole) up to the end of the accelerator rod coming across the firewall. Wierd. The spring they sold me was about 6 inches too short, and kinda flimsy so I made an extension from some wire and it works, kinda.

It still doesn't bottom out the throttle all the way, so I'm gonna shorten the extension to get more tension. I'd like to go the way BA's does though. Since there's a hole on the bottom of that lever, it seems like that would work.

I'll get you a pic of where it hooks up on the manifold.

EDIT:

Should be able to see it hooked up to the manifold just stretch it and put it there.
