Ok, I know it's been asked 200 bil times, but I am asking at again.

I just sold one of my AK47s, and have a few bucks to spend on the Mustang. Exhaust.

The two I am considering most are Flowmaster 40 series kit from NPD, or the Flowmaster X pipe system from a local dealer here (same kit NPD has for $650 or so, guy is selling for $315)

I have never heard a SBF with the Magnaflow system, and youtube doesn't do any audio justice. Anyone have any recommendations? I know that 40 series start to "drone" but this isnt a Daily Driver for me, few times a week at most, so I'm not terribly concerned with that aspect of it.

Whats the difference in sound and performance between the two kits? Difference between h pipe and x pipe?

SLP Loudmouth and x-pipe sounds great. I guess I'm tired of Flowmaster & Magnaflow cause everyone has it.

 

I have a magnaflow on my 361c.i. sbf, and here's the deal. Magnaflow is a bit quieter than flowmaster at idle. At WOT it's plenty loud though. However, Magnaflow performs better by a few horsies. Flowmaster's sound is very common so I like the fact that I can lie about my 361 being a 302 with my magnaflow.

 

Everyone has one or the other.. I went with a complete JBA Stainless steel setup from the headers to exhaust tips.

 

Not a fan of X-pipes on sbf's. In my experience, they tend to have a weird high pitched tone to them. Basically, they don't sound right.

That said, I much prefer Magnaflow mufflers over Flowmaster 40's. A nicer, more even tone. Less blatty and raspy than the Flowmaster 40's.

 

Pretty much regardless of the actual mufflers installed, an H-pipe exhaust will have a heavier bass, "rougher" rumble quality to the sound, while the X-pipe exhaust sound is "smoother", higher-pitched, quieter at low rpms, but which suddenly gets more "snarly" once you hit somewhere near midrange. X-pipe systems can be worth a few extra HP & torque in the upper rev range.

If you like the sound of a high revving motor, choose the X. If it's the rumble that has more appeal, pick the H.

I'm afraid that I can't offer any useful opinions with respect to anybody's complete kit though - I've always used either straight-through or "turbo" mufflers bought on the basis of specs and price (rather than name) and fabbed up the rest from straight pipe and mandrel bends.
