Default transmission fluid

Hi,
I noticed My tanny seems to be a little loud. I have a manual 3 speed. I was thinking of draining the fluid and adding new fluid. Could someone tell me the best fluid I should use for my classic tranny.

Thanks

140W gear oil. dont use synthetic since thas probably whats NOT in there. I would just drain the entire thing and refill it. The oil is pretty cheap. Use gloves so you dont get any on you as it is stinky. Fill till it comes out the fill hole on a level surface.

Thank you, I was looking for tranny oil and found 140W oil but it had another # beside it. Now does that really matter? Also I noticed a small leak coming from the bell housing. Is this a real problem?

whoa whoa whoa ... he is talking Tranny NOT rear end like you are talking about. That 140W gear oil is for the rear end housing not the trans. Someone correct me if im wrong but the manual trans take the same Type FA transmission fluid as the auto trans do ...

Also you do NOT want to over fill the trans as youll leak all over and cause other issues. if you think you have a leak id fill it up and try to clean everything off and run it a couple times and then check the level as well as underneath for where a leak may be coming from.

Well type FA is the wrong fluid for the automatic transmissions as well. FA is a dextron style fluid. Autos you want type F and thats it.

Newer transmission like the T5 use ATF fluid which tend to be a mercron dextron style.

It probably had a 90 in front of it right? That just means it is a multi viscosity.

Was the leak between the bell and the trans or the bell and the motor?

As I said before you want to fill it till it just starts to come out of the fill hole. You can use a pinky finger to check the fluid height but careful not to get it stuck. changing trans fluid is always a pain and almost always makes a mess just have a drip pan and some rags... It snot a big deal.

The leak is dripping from the round bell housing. Looks like a flat plate with screws on it. The color is black to dark brown.

140 weight oil is very, very thick. Too thick for a tranny unless it's running really high rpm's in higher temps.

The tranny is supposed to have 75W-90 in it. Synthetic would be best.

How "loud" is the tranny, and when does it make noise? Reverse will always whine quite a bit as the gears are straight-cut rather than helical, like all the other gears. Realize that the tranny is 40 years old and it probably made a fair amount of noise from the factory. It's not going to be as quiet as a modern tranny.

Default tranny fluid

So just tring to understand this correct. I found some oil that has 90W 140W. This would be fine for my 3 speed manual transmission?

90 weight if it's behind a stock engine or you drive like an old woman. 140 for very hot summer climates, especially if you have a higher output engine or drive more aggressively.

Auto trans fluid is for the newer TREMEC transmissions, T5(starting at a certain year) and up.
