Default Automatic with overdrive help

I searched and found a little info on the site, but had a few more questions. I have a C4 right now and would like to do an AOD swap. I have the original 289 in it. What should I be looking for in terms of model years that will bolt right up? Will it bolt right up? What else will I have to change to make this work? (driveshaft, flywheel, torque converter etc?)

Thanks, Jeff

So far, I've learned you need an AOD, not an AODE. I think the early '90s is when they quit making AOD & started making AODE, but don't quote me on that. I think if it came out of a Fox body V8 Mustang, you'll have the right transmission.

I found a guy who sells an entire conversion kit Here's his website. The Deluxe kit is about 3/4 down the page:

Great site. That kit looks like it has everything I would need. Do you happen to know if I can use my original driveshaft?

I called the guy. He said if the tail piece is 10.25" then you won't have to modify your driveshaft. I'm not exactly sure because I'm at work right now, but I think I have to go home and remove the end of the transmission in order to see the gear that drives the speedometer gear. I need to tell him how many teeth my gear has. He said most have 7, but some had 8 and 9 also. I think he needs to know in order to send the correct speedometer gear. He said the piece I have to remove is the piece that must measure 10.25" in order to be able to use my existing driveshaft.

Depending on the model of your Mustang, you may also receive a piece that will be used to relocate your parking brake cable.

What isn't included is transmission lines. He said I'd have to make my own.

You should be able to measure the length without removing it...

Im in the middle of the same swap. That is the kit that I got and it has mostly everything you need.

Quick question though, will the c4 motor plate work or do I need to find one special for the AOD?
