Default Engine question

Was talking to my dad about the 302 block I can get cheap. Was wondering if it is possible to put 351W parts in a 302 block. If so how many CIs would that make or what kind of engine would that be considered?

302 block possibly bored w/ 351W intake, heads, cam, crank, and 302 pistons.

Trying to see if I should buy both the 351W and the 302 block. Swap everything to the 302 and sell the 351W block.

i dont think so. if your going to swap parts. get the 302 block, preferably roller. and go to rockauto and put 289 internals in it.

you need 351 heads to run a 351 intake i beleive

you can swap a 351w cam into a 302 but you just need to change the firing order, which is nothing
as far as rotating assy i beleive the journals are different for the crank so it would need to get ground. and since the deck height of a 351 is like .7 taller than a 302 the internals would not work anyways.

please correct me if im wrong

Just build the 351W if you already have it.

I will get 351 heads also. The 302 block is from a 93 so it is a roller, I believe.

The journals are different. The 351W is also taller than the 302.

Sounds like I will just get the 351W and build it.

All '86 and later 302 blocks are roller capable with a large base-circle cam. Only the H.O. models actually have roller lifters in them from the factory. The H.O. blocks also use the 351w firing order. HO engines also came with forged pistons instead of cast or hyper-eutectic. HO came in all mustangs and some of the larger passenger cars. AFAIK it never came in a truck.

you can retrofit late-model rollers onto an earlier block by drilling a couple of holes in the galley for the spider. you will need to run a small base circle cam (retrofit cam).

AFAIK, only 351w blocks made since '94 are large base-circle roller capable. f4te i think is the casting number.

There isn't any real advantage to transplanting the internals from a 351w. nor the heads - the only real difference between 302 and 351w heads since the early 70's is that the 351w use larger bolts. the 351w intake won't work on a 302 because the shorter deck height makes for a narrower intake.

in summation - either build a 351w or build a 302 but there isn't a reason to try to mix and match. it'll cost the roughly the same for either engine.
