Unhappy Pitted Windshield

My 68 windshield has pits all thru it about the size of grains of sand. Not bad until the sun hits it then they really show up. Almost looks like the pits are actually inside the glass itself. Not talking about pits from rocks hitting it. These are extremely small and are on/in the entire windshield. Is this something that just happens to older windshields? Is there any way to repair it?

My mom's 68's windshield is the same way. I think it might have something to do with the way it's made?

Windshields are actually a plastic/glass/plastic laminate sandwich, called safety glass. The plastic on the surface is what's pitted. Winshield wipers can also scratch it. You need a new windshield to fix it. They are still available for old mustangs thru windshield glass shops.

Not sure.. plastic/glass/plastic makes sense since when the glass is smashed in it usually still holds together.

a windshield is actually glass/vinyl/glass and then they are super heated together. the plastic holds the peices together and the glass is tempered so it shatters instead of breaking in large peices.

also i have heard of companies advertising being able to fix rock chips and small cracks on your winshield.

i assume they use some sort of resin and the then polish it out

edit:

here is a 5min video from the show how its made

My windshield is the same way. It'd take weeks to repair each and every pit, and the end result would be a wavy, distorted windshield. Better off to replace it.
