Default 65 Home Made Shroud.

Hi Everybody,
After my engine kept heating all the time I`ve installed a shroud - I didnt order the original one because they wanted to charge me about 100$ delivery so I`ve decided to build one on my own.

After I`ve installed it I got lot of good feedbacks from pepole around here and I`ve decided to let you guys see it also, Let me think what do you think.

About the heating, It did change a bit and now all toghther ( 5 blade fan, electric fan, shroud ) are makeing my engine cooler.
What I`ve wated to ask is what dgree does your engine runs on ? mine gets to 190 dgree and stays there ( It was more before ), is it okay for a V-8 engine 289 ? should it be cooler ? and if so, how can I do that?

This is the link to the server with the pics.. ( had some problems uploading here... ):

I know there is more work to do on the engine but I`ve just wanted to sinish with the heating problem first...

btw:all the things cost me something like 15$...
Let me know what do you think.
Thanks,
Eran.

Eran, your pics don't show the shroud very well, but it appears you may have solved your heating problem, because these engines were designed to run at about 190 degrees. BTW, nice looking engine and bay.

Trust me Eran, 190 degrees fareinheit is perfect. 212 degrees is boiling in fareinheit degrees, so you are sitting perfect. If you have a 180 degree thermostat, then your thermostat will open at 180, and the 190 will be reached and maintained. I saw your pictures that you posted, but only the top half of your home made shroud was visible. It appears to made out of fiberglas.

Hi
well. I hope it will stay like that and the problem will be fixed..

Anyhow, Its not fiberglass its a metal shroud. I got the metal piece from a guy who work with this stuff and I made it in a way I needed it. It wasnt hard at all. at the end of the metal as you can see I put some rubber band just to give it another protection - for not scratching my rad.

I think it went out great, all I have to do now is colour it to black and put the caution fan sticker...

Anyway, Thanks for helping I hope to write in a few days that the problem have been solved.

Eran,, i've been working on a 68 coupe. i've rebuilt the motor, boring it .30 and putting an edlebrock performance cam, intake and 600 carb on it. I was heating all the way to HOT within a mile.... I replaced my radiator w/ a 3 coil today. I have a 192 thermostat in, but it still is running hot. I didn't venture far today before the needle started toward the HOT mark again. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. If 289's were prone to heat perhaps you've heard of something. I don't have a stroud on mine, but the fan appears to be pulling a good bit of air across the radiator.

The shroud isn't supposed to completely cover the fan, only 3/4 deep on it.

Hi There KLS:
Where are you from ? are you from a hot country ? if so I think you might have the same problem as I am...
First try to change your fan into 7 blade your engine needs bigger fan than mine. second I think you should change the thermostat into 180 , I think 190 its too high ( Please someone correct me If I`m wrong ).
Try installing a shroud it did change a bit for me

Markstang:
About covering 3/4 of the fan its not quite true and really doesnt make any diffrent. try looking at the Hi-Po shroud that are oofering for sale - looks the same.

For you guys who are still having heating problems, and you have tried everything from replacing you radiator with a 3 or 4 row, put on a 5-7 blade fan, a shroud, used wetter water in your anti-freeze mixture, etc. I would suggest you look into getting a Griffin aluminum radiator. I didn't have to go that far to get mine cooled down, but some of you may if you live in super hot country and you have some heat producing mods and you want your time a little advanced.
