Default Fuel Level Sending Unit

Is it difficult to replace the sending unit without removing the tank? That is what the service manual suggests. Drain fuel, pull wire and hose, remove sending unit.....Car is a GT so no muffler in front of the tank.

Is the concours correct version with the brass float from scott drake a decent unit? Was planning to head over to John's Mustang and pick one up this afternoon. Did not seem like too difficult a job.

Suggestions or hints and tricks appreciated. Thanks!

I would pull the tank, it makes it tons easier if you don't have a lift.

It can be done with no problem with the tank left in the car. Drain the fuel, disconnect the wire and fuel line from the sending unit and remove. When replacing the sending unit use a new o-ring.

Thanks for the help guys. Got er done last night. Went by John's mustang and picked up a new Stainless Steel pickup/sender assy. Siphoned gas out then drained the rest from the drain plug. Removing the ring holding the old sender was no big deal. Installed the new sender using a small dab of wheel bearing grease to hold the o-ring in place. Hooked it up and put 5 gals back in and the gauge works again! Not a bad job at all other than the gas smell and being carful with the fuel.
