I don't know if Megasquirt offers this capability; most of my experience centered around an Accel/DFI SuperRam multiport system (speed density) for a SBC.

megasquirt has all sorts of settings- fuel & ignition map, acceleration enrichment, fast idle, cold enrichment, etc. along with some unconventional ones like water injection, nitrous/boost maps. i think there is a highway mode available where it leans things out during cruise. There are also some unconventional settings like # of cylinders, type of ignition, engine displacement, etc that are related to the more generic nature of the system.

The code for the controller is open source, so you can pretty much make it do whatever you want. All settings are flashed. There aren't any pots or a programmer like the pre-built systems.

The one I built is a couple of generations old. The latest megasquirts are much more powerful than what I have. The MS does require a lot more knowledge than the stock EFI + piggyback controllers or using something from Edelbrock or Holley or Accel.

yeah, I agree. it generally doesn't make sense to buy things to improve fuel economy unless you're in it for the long haul. a 6mpg improvement is pretty hard to come by and even that would take 1 year of daily driving to recoup. a more realistic 2-3 mpg would take 2-3+ years to recoup.

that's part of driving a classic though. if you're only worried about practicability, you're doing it wrong

the driveability and user-friendliness aspects of efi are very real though. except on motorcycles. CV carbs are so much smoother than the on/off efi honda uses (not sure about other manufacturers).

A carb will get good mileage as well, nearly as good as EFI if you have a properly built engine with a good, well tuned carb. With a 5spd and 3.55's with a built 302 and a carb I get around 24-25mpg on the highway. Most of it is in how you drive, but carbs will get nearly as good a mileage as EFI will, and in reality if you had a well tuned carb and witched to EFI you'd be lucky to pick up even 2mpg. Performance engines tend to not get as good a mileage either...consider that my carb'd 302 gets 25mpg on the highway, which is about what a new EFI Mustang gets, or the Honda S2000(high rpm 4 cylinder).

If you are looking at EFI though, also consider FAST's new EZ-EFI, or Megasquirt if you wanna learn and like building things, or a factory donor swap.

I would look at the new gen TBI's, forget about the holley commander as I have been there done that. I have run the holleys and they work good but the new gen TBI's use high pressure injectors for better fuel atomization like MPI, allow you to keep your carbed intake, makes more power than a perfectly tuned carb and efi throttle reponse, economy and more TQ. the holley is a PITA to tune the new TBI's like the powerjection 3 and the EZ-efi have a wide band 02 sensor and tune themselves. The powerjection is desguised as a demon carb, the older models powerjection 1 had igniition control as well but for the money and hp/tq you cant beat them.

I am keeping mine carbed. I like the nostalgic part of it. Besides with the T5 it is getting about 18 mpg. That is city highway mix with mild hot rodding here and there.

If I was to go EFI, I would just go with a fox body 5.0 setup. It does require different intakes but is easy to come by and not that expensive. Also, parts for it can be easily purchased.

I have an Accel DFI in service and love it. I also have the Edelbrock 35210 but the car is not finished yet (suspension issues), I hope to have it going in about two weeks.. The car has boost so the ECM will have to be updated VIA a program with the laptop (no chip burning). The 35210 comes with a handheld controller or you can use a laptop and will also accept a optional wideband to aid in tuning (if you want). The install is simple and I am guessing that can be done in a day. Drilling the firewall (a "Green Lee" hole punch tool works wonders) and running the fuel line/pump are the biggies. Goodluck.

Edelbrock's newer EFI setups are starting to look good. The Pro Flo 2 and the XT.

I'm cheap if its a mild engine the efi off a 5.0 will work just fine and its cheap to get.
