Yep, that is right.

To fix a oil burning issue, you need to fix the leak of where the oil is entering the cylinder. The best way to tell that is to do or have done a leak down test. If the rings are worn, you need to pull the motor, hone/bore the cylinders, and replace rings/pistons depending on what all you had to do to get a good even cylinder wall. If the valve seals are bad, you pull the heads and have a valve job done (might as well have new springs installed, new valve seals, and new valve seats cut).

That being said, burning oil in moderation is not terrible although not very good for the environment. You can always change the plug temperature range to burn more oil. You mention needing a quart every how many miles in 2-3 weeks?

the burning oil thing is not a big deal, i was putting a lot of miles on it in the last month driving back and forth home twice for about 1000 miles. so i can deal with that.

but what i cant deal with is running lean, which i am. the jets in my 570 are just too small for my engine, even though it is stock. after driving a short time today i got home and pulled all the plugs again and they all are a shade of white, some worse than others.

so i am gonna step up 4 sizes, going from 54 to 58 in the primaries and see what happens.

my question is: will there be anything in addition to the jets that i need to buy? bowl gaskets? sealer? washers? anything? and how many jets am i gonna need? 2? 4? sorry for the noob questions i just have never done this before

There are two jets in the primary metering block and two jets in the secondary metering block. Four jets can be a big move. I would recommend a two jet size jump and then see where you are. If I went 4 jets on my 383 it would move 3 or more AFR points. So, you need two new jets for the primary. If you are tuning just the primary side, make sure you are looking at the plugs after you are driven just on the primaries (no load...just cruise) otherwise you do not know what to do on the secondary side.

You do not NEED anything but jets to change jets, but if you tear a gasket, you will need to replace it. DO NOT over tighten the bowl screws. The carb body is aluminum and soft so it will strip, which is done often including my me .

alright sounds good, gracias. so once i figure out what size is good for primaries, how do i decide which size the engine likes for secondaries? by driving down the highway at WOT?

Yep...that is the fun part ! Basically you do some WOT pulls back to back to back...then stop as soon as possible and check the plugs. It works best if the plugs are new or at least clean. Before I had an AFR meter, I would do this and then pull some of the easy plugs on the side of the road (I would zip up and down the road near a road side park).

aww, sick girlfriends is no fun for anyone

well the results are in and...

Went from a 54 jet to a 58 in the primaries and it runs smooooooth as butter. the difference is like day and night, no joke. went for a short 20 minute cruise through town and am very very happy.

before the change it used to surge and hesitate like crazy while cruising at low rpms, now that is all gone and it runs beautifully.

I picked up a pair of 56s as well on the off chance that 58s would be too rich, and while i haven't pulled the plugs yet, im pretty confident the 58s are exactly what my engine wants.

Now i need to get rid of the squeeks up front, but that will be for another day.
