Default electric water pumps

i have look at and read a lot of postings on this site and have noticed that there are a lot of electric water pumps on classic mustangs. i was just wondering if they are practical on a daily driver - also, what are the advantages and disadvantages? i have a 67 mustang convertible and am always looking to upgrade - as money allows.

Really? I can't recall anyone offhand that has one.

IMO, it's a waste on a car that gets driven on the street any reasonable amount of time. It's one more thing to break, and you have to remember to turn it on with the car.

There's nothing wrong with a good mechanical water pump.

Good electric water pumps are quite reliable and you just wire it into the 12v switch so it's on when the car's on. That said they're also expensive, and don't really free up any measurable power on most street engines. They have advantages and disadvantages, but unless you have a built up engine that gets raced a lot they're not really worth it. Mechanicals are a lot cheaper.

also remember you will have to go with an electric fan if you go with an elec water pump as there will be nothing to bolt the mech fan to

Yes, and you'd then need to make sure you have an alternator that's up to the task.

I for one have been considering a hamster powered pump, but we did not have quite enough room for the treadmill wheel...

If you want something electric go for an electric fan. I really like my black magic by flexalite. Its never on unless im at a traffic light. I can drive it from central Ca to the coast or central Ca to vegas and during the whole 3.5 or 6 hr trip the fan is on for a total of 10 minutes when I stop to get gas or food. I think thats a whole lot smarter than spinning the nasty fixed blad fans at 3000 RPM for 7 hrs dont you?

I would think the savings from an electic water pump would be marginal if not zero or actually - As load is transfered to the alternator which must work harder thus putting the load back on the engine so your back to where you started...That is not the case with the fan.
