Default 1406 Edlebrock Starting problem

Hello all, I have a 65 mustang fastback with a 289, Eldlebrock performer manifold with a 1406 Edlebrock electric choke carb. The car has not been driven very much for the last few years. I recently have done alot of work to it and have it running. My problem is getting the car started. When I try to start it, it just turns over and over. I usually have to pour some gas in the carb to get it started. Once it starts and able to keep it running it does fine. I have noticed that when I try to start for the first time, I dont notice any gas being sprayed in the carb when then throttle is opened. Shouldn't gas be sprayed when I pump the throttle. Do I need to adjust the floats or something. I not a carb guy. If no gas is being sprayed into the carb at start up, how does the carb spray gas after it is started and running. Probably a stupid question. Just thought I would ask anyway. Thanks.

yes when u blip the throttle twice while looking down the carb u should see 2 healthy squirts of fuel. if u dont, then, um, there might be a problem lol

check if it does work work when you had the car running.
as in get it started switch off, then pump. does it spray now?
if it does then the problem before start is that there's no gas in the carburetor. this is quite odd since the edelbrocks don't loose fuel during the night (leak).
maybe it's just the fact that the carb is getting hot after shutoff and all the fuel in the carb evaporates ?
maybe someone with a bit more edl carb experience has an explanation for that

Could it be a Bad Accelerator pump? When you try to "prime" isnt the accelerator pump what actually squirts the gas?

yes, but it sounds like its working once the negine is running. not sure, OP needs to confirm. If that's the case then there's simply no fuel in carb at that given time

+1 on Kalli's idea of checking the accel pump to see if it sprays while running. If it doesn't spray when you KNOW you have fuel in the carb, it's most likely the rubber cup on the accel pump. Very easy to solve with the right parts. It could also be that the passage way to the accel pump is clogged.

If it does spray while the engine is running, but not after sitting overnight, then something is letting the fuel drain completely out (or evaporate) after the engine shuts down. That seems a little extreme. Any visible leaks?

I haven't noticed any gas leaks, but when I do try to start it after sitting over night, there is no gas in the glass fuel filter. So possibly, is the gas draining back into the fuel pump. The fuel pump is stock. Does anyone have any good instructions explaining how to remove the top of carb and check the accelerator pump and floats. Been looking.

http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_...406_manual.pdf owners manual

http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_.../1000/1477.pdf rebuild kit instructions

If it is the accel pump, go to edelbrock's site and look for part #1470

The rebuild is pretty simple if you decide to do it. If you decide to take the accel jets/nozzle off, first check the instructions for where the Pump Dishcharge Ball is (# 38 on the dwg), and DON'T LOSE IT!

thanks for the info fishkg, I haven't rebuilt the carb yet. I was hoping to find a illustrated procedure to rebuild it. Just don't want to screw it up. Thanks again. Gonna keep looking, hopefully i'll find something. If I do i'll post it.

and what's the story when the car is started? do you then get that squirt?
if yes get car started and make sure it doesn't warm up.
switch off car and leave for the night
if it works the next morning (you get that squirt and car starts right up) then your problem is heat related and a spacer might help
