gt 350
in the late 1960, they had the shelby GT 350s, which are highly sought after. What was the difference between these cars and the regular Ford mustang V8's other than the shelby name ??
Reason I ask, is that everyone seems to bad mouth the modern shelby Gt, as simply a GT with a lot of badging. So, I am curious what was the difference back then...

well, I cant help on the classic Shelby's, but the new era Shelby's are very different than the standard GT's. Standard GT's come with the N/A 4.6L V8's and 5 spd manual or 5 spd auto, the Shelby's come with a S/C 5.4L V8 and then are backed by a 6spd manual trans. So I'm not sure why people are calling them overbadged GT's.
The attached link has a list of all the unique items found on the original Shelbys.

Modern Shelby Mustangs include (there are a few small special editions, but these are the basic ones):
-GT500 (Supercharged 5.4L)
---->Can be upgraded by Shelby with a bigger supercharger, brakes and suspension (aka Super Snake)
-Shelby GT ('SGT', 4.6L ~325hp, intake, exhaust, tuning, suspension, body kit, stripes)
---->Can be upgraded by Shelby with a supercharger (aka GT/SC), big brakes, interior pieces
-Terlingua (Supercharged 4.0L, brakes, suspension, body kit, paint)
-Shelby CS6 and CS8 (this are customer purchased kits that are Shelby authorized- supercharger, suspension, body kit, interior trim, optional stripes)
-Shelby SR (most recent addition- these are GT models that are converted to a 'Street Race' model)
It should be noted that the GT500 is built completely by Ford at the factory, and only uses Shelby approved design elements. This is in contrast to the Shelby GT or any of the conversions such as the Terlingua, SR or Super Snake which are done either by Shelby Automobiles Inc (SAI) or an authorized Shelby Mod Shop like Quantum Performance. The CS6 and CS8 are kits are sold by Shelby, but are customer installed.
In addition, there is NOT a GT350 model. There are several reasons why SAI didn't build one, but the fact remains that there is not a S197 GT350 at this point. In my opinion, the SGT is basically what a GT350 would have been (using the smaller engine with more power than a standard GT, better exhaust sound, stiffer suspension, and mild body modifications).

socalwrench, I gotta tell you I didn't know all that, I work as a technician at a ford dealership, and all I see is the GT500. so that led me to believe that was the "Shelby" version. It's good to know that. I'm not particularly proud to work for ford, but for now it's a paying job that I can rely on everyday. I bought a classic mustang to build cause I was tired of my Father-in-law talking smack about his 06 gt that he put a saleen Supercharger and put down 430hp to the wheels on. So my goal is to build a motor that will put down that kind of power Naturally Aspirated.
347, light internals, good heads/cam and all the goodies. With the suspension and other necessities to match, his Saleen blown S197 will get slapped around pretty good. Or build a 408 and slap him with the boom of a 300ton crane.
The old Shelbys depends the year but the fastest one still to this day was the 67 gt500 super snake the real one not any Eleanor. It did 170 on a banked oval and had a avg speed of 142mph he was testing tires for good year in it.For the new Shelby only one i have drove was a Hertz one my bother and me rented. It was a auto and lacked power to me.I have drove faster 03/04 cobras maybe hertz detuned it I'm not sure but it kinda ticked me off being a auto tho.
