Can I keep the two good tires in the rear (245/45/17) and replace the front with smaller tires to fit?

 

In a word, no. You'd have to do some serious massaging to the front fenders on a 65-66 to cram 8" wheels up there. The backs would probably fit if you rolled the fenders, but not the front.

Plus, you'd need wheel adaptors to achieve proper backspacing.

 

I forgot to mention that my front and rear fenders are rolled.

You can't put an 8" rim in the front of a 66?

 

Like I said, not without significantly altering the front fenders. Rolling the fender lips won't be enough. These cars just weren't designed for wheels/tires that wide. 7" will fit (but may rub, depending on tire size), but not 8".

 

I fit 16x8's and 17x8's 4 1/2 backspace with no problem on my '65 and '66. I didn't even have my fenders rolled on the '65 and the 17x8's fit great.

 

I'm not sure if 5.72 backspacing will make a big difference but i know the 16x8's and 17x8's with 4 1/2 backspacing will fit like a champ! with or without rolled fenders but your better off rolling them to avoid rubbing on corners..

 

You will have to use wheel adapters. There is someone on here with those rims on his 65-66.

My 245 40 17s on 17x8 with 4.75 backspacing fit just fine on the front of my 65 mustang. And I don't even have my fenders rolled.

Please note I do run -2.5 in the 'ole alignment department though and have the shelby drop on the upper arm

As originally mentioned however...those wheels will not work without the use of adapters to adjust the backspacing and I do not like the idea of 245 45 17 on the front given my knowledge of my own setup and where it sounds like his ride height is at. I also successfully ran 235 45 17 for years on the front on my 8 inch rim so that might be a better fit if your stance is as low as it sounds like.
