Default Starter smoked

Hey guys I have been in eleterical hell with my car lately (it sat for a while before I bought it and sat for a while when I was suppose to deploy)

I just replaced the solenoid, starter to solenoid cable, ground strap to engine, and starter.

I went to start it tonight and there was some grey smoke from the starter area, hard to say 100% as I was inside the car. At first I was concerned but I took the battery out and charged it, and it tried to start it again and it started just fine.

Should I be concerned about the starter? Its got a 1 yr warranty on is so I can replace it for nothing if need be (other than the few minutes spent removing and replacing)

Any thoughts? It was a grey smoke smelt a little bit like plastic

Well I went to start it up again and figured out fast what the problem was.

It seems that when I installed the new starter the relay to starter cable's metal connector end was touching the starter housing causing a short.

How do I install this to avoid this next time? Anyone have a picture? I tried goolging but I was unable to find a picture of the install.

Thanks much off to orileys in the morning to return that starter
