Shop craigslist in Phoenix and Tucson. A used 6 cylinder comes up about once a month. Often, they have few miles on a rebuild and are switching to a V8.

That quote is less than what it cost to get my 200 rebuilt and bored .040

PO had the 200 in my 67 rebuilt and bored .040 for something like $2200. I'll have to check the papers tomorrow for the exact cost.

Also, on craigslist there is an add under parts for rent a shop. The mustang shop in chandler has a used 6 cylinder. I am not sure it runs. But it may be an alternative while your motor is rebuilt. If your not concerned about originality I gotta believe there is an engine shop in town that exchanges those.

found one look here

well if your just looking for a non performance engine. you could go to the Engine House. i bet that you could get a long block for about $900.
The Enigine house is on the I-17 access road right about northern ave. they can even do the swap for you.
I bought a straight 6 for my 79 f100 for $800 about 7 years ago and it is still running very strong today.
