Default This CAM and DIZZY = OK together?

HI!

Here's my cam (comp roller retro-fit cam):
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-31-442-8

I currently have a stock distributor, I want to upgrade it. I was looking at a fancy CRANE model, but they seem to be out of business? How is this one? I have been reading about making sure the cam gear matches same material as the distributor gear, I want to make sure something doesn't blow up:

Distributor:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MSD-8582/

I can't seem to find what type of gear is on the CAM, but the DIZZY is listed as IRON.. is that ok?

Thanks guys! This is the place to ask!!

In general the distributer DRIVE gear on the cam is the same material as the cam. Flat tappet cams are generally cast iron base and would match with that distributer DRIVEN gear you refrence. Roller cams are generally steel, not iron. The distributer gear would also be steel. (old school ran bronze dizzy gear on a roller cam but they do not last long for a street application, steel distributer gear with modern lubricants will outlast the motor).

Did that answer your question?

i can't comment on the gear itself, but as your question to Crane:
- they're back in business
- they started making those pro-curve distributors again
- i'm going to get myself one
- i emailed them about 4 weeks ago (around SEMA time) and they told me in about a weeks time (back then ) they'd start shipping them again

So check with summit or crane directly if you want one of them ...

but don't forget: if you do get such a distributor as posted, it will not work with your stock system as far as I know. you'll need the MSD 6A box as well (i believe)

The same will probably apply if you are going the crane route

Well thats good news they are back..

I have a Crane HI-6 box, I assume that would work also with the Crane distributor, I think that's why I looked at that one in the first place.

Here is the link to the Crane one:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CRN-1000-1600/

SO, couple questions then:

-Does the gear and cam HAVE to be same material? I just want to make sure with my cam that I won't be blowing anything up.

-My cam is a roller, but it's a retro-fit roller.. so I don't know if it would have the steel gear as apparently most rollers do, or if it would try to retain the original style iron gear, since thats what the retro-fitted engine would most likely have. Maybe I should just call Comp cams.

-The application page says "1/4 in. shaft", does that mean anything? I don't have a stock oil pump, but I have a stock distributor, so I assume the dizzy and oil pump are using the same dimension oil drive shaft as stock.. is 1/4 in. bigger/smaller than stock? Would I need any adapter?

Thanks guys!

I called Comp Cams, the tech said they use "melonized steel" on their camshafts and they recommend steel distributor drive gears.

Guess that answers the question! Thanks for the input guys.
