which muffler?
hey fellas i need to go down and put my mufflers on fri. my mechanic suggest that i run the pipes straight from the headers over the back of the axle, no h pipe. from what i have been reading everyone suggest putting the h pipe on cept for my mechanic. the guy builds 8 and nine second cars so he knows what he is talking about. aslo what mufflers do you guys suggest? i was thinking 2 chamber flows.
its a 64.5, 5.0 probably 345-355 horse

You want a crossover pipe, no doubt. 2 Chamber Flows sound great... deep and mean sounding... but there are better performing mufflers out there. Up to you, do you want better sound or better performance? Either way the difference isn't much, I run Flows now because I prefer the sound of them.
His 8 & 9 second cars probably have open headers. And just because a car runs ok without an "H" doesn't mean it won't run better with one. The guy can say all day long that the street cars he run with no crossover pipe run just fine... but the fact is the crossover is there for a reason. It smoothes the torque curve, builds torque by reducing backpressure (yes, it reduces backpressure by allowing some of the exhaust to pass through the other pipe for less resistance), even mellows out the exhaust tone some. It also helps with cylinder scavaging by creating low pressure in pipe opposite the one thats firing at the time.
Theirs no reson to not run a crossover pipe on a V type engine, unless maybe its a drag car that runs open exhause and has a cam design that doesnt need benefits of exhaust pipe scavanging.

I've got a buddy turning 8's in the quarter with a naturally aspirated flat head. He don't have no stinkin "H" pipe...course there's no water in the block, runs on 60% nitro, and has 4 short (yes 4 for you guys who know flat heads) straight pipes on each bank.
Now if you want a good sound, and to be able to pick up a little more power, and not lose your low end running sewer pipes for exhaust, you probably want an "H" pipe.
Dude, I thought you were going to run the side exhaust system??? What happened? I was looking forward to sound bites.

Would it be obnoxiously loud??? HECK YES!!!! But so much the better when some punk comes up blasting nothing but bass out of his 10 megaWatt stereo. A few rips to about 6K rpm and that would shut him up (or at least get some good oily soot on his car
). If you plan to do any touring, or are going to be driving it daily, yeah, I'd stick with the exhaust plumbed all the way to the valance, and then use turn downs. Will have a great sound, and cruising down the highway will still be pleasurable.
So are you goning to run an "H" pipe?
