Someone here did this not too long ago. Posted a bunch of pics and details as well.
Nothing wrong with this at all.. in fact its always very cool when you see custom fab work. The problem here is unless you know how to weld and do the fab work yourself your likely SOL.

You can do about anything with enough money and time. Not every part will work as well or easily as some, finding the ones that come the closest with the least amount of hassle and special parts/fabrication is the key. But you can make anything work, its just making it work well that is the difference.
The Taurus rack and pinion has been done on the classic Mustangs. From what I gather it works, but the travel of the rack is limited which limits the turning radius of the car. From what I have read (no first hand experience), they can be made to work very well except for the turning radius problem. This is a problem with most rack and pinion systems, especially using an off the shelf unit. Some of the aftermarket rack and pinion units have solved this by going to a custom rack that has more travel. Most of the aftermarket units use a variation of the GM J-car rack because it has a bit more travel. Still not enough to give you the stock turning radius but closer than the taurus rack.
