well i bought my car about 3 months ago. and about 4 days after i got it it stopped going into reverse. then after not long it stopped shifting out of first.

its a c4 on a 65'

 

Does the lever move into reverse, but the trans doesn't shift to reverse?

Could be linkage, in which case I'd rebuild the shifter and make sure you adjust it properly. Could also be the vacuum modulator, or simply the vacuum line that goes between the tranny and engine.

It's free to check the vacuum lines, so start there. Unless someone has recently rebuilt the shifter it probably needs it, that's pretty cheap too. Also, I'd change the fluid and filter in the transmission.
