Default 1964 ½ center console question

Hi,

My husband just recently purchased a 1964½ mustang. He wants to restore it, but he also wants to add gauges (oil pressure, rpms, etc). He is toying with idea of removing the center console to provide room for those gauges. He also wants to replace the shifter for one that is better suited for drag racing. I personally feel that even though the console serves no purpose it is cool looking and is original to the car. Do any of you have a suggestions on how my husband can put in gauges/shifter without taking out the console. I appreciate any help you can give. Thanks so much!!

there's a way, but it's expensive. You can buy a custom Instrument cluster and install the guages you want in it. It has two holes for a speedo and Tach, and i think there are 4 smaller holes for the other guages. I agree with you, the consoles make them look better. If he does take it out, i'll be interested in buying it.

Along with what 6Mustang6 has suggested:

For the gauge set that's easy. To keep a more period correct look, you can add a Rally-Pak. Instead of the clock, put in an oil pressure gauge. Or add the Rally-Pak and a GT350 type Pod Like this:

That would give you room for a Tach, clock, oil pressure gauge and volt meter. Everything you need to get to the starting line on time!

They also make a gauge pod that fits on the "A" pilar (the windshield post right in front of the vent window), that will hold up to three gauges.

Or you could opt for the late 65-66 5 gauge cluster. It would take a little personality away, but it's not hard to swap. In the link above look at his gauges that's the later style I'm refering to.

As for the shifter, that will be more difficult. First off you need to know that the center console is not an everyday option. So having it in your '64 1/2 is something special. Depending on the condition of what you have now, you may want to consider picking up a Reproduced console plastic base, and some reproduced plates. Get the shifter you want, then mock everything up on the bench to fit the new shifter in the repro console. I think the B&M slap stick has a fairly small footprint. You'll have to get creative to blend the two pieces together to make it look factory.

Later when he realizes that drag racing is for people who don't really know how to drive , He can put the stock console back in with a nice 5 speed and go road racing!

Just kidding on the drag racing, so don't flame me... too bad! [sm=icon_rofl.gif]

Nice to see another great woman who stands with her man, on this forum.

Good luck,

Good luck,
He needs to put that 64 1/2 original Mustang back to original condition and get another frame to put all the hot rod crap in, and go to the drag strip all he wants. The original 64 1/2 Mustang was not designed, nor was it intended to be a drag strip car. The center console for that car is a very rare item, and one you don't want to alter or get rid of. Now, with all this said, you have to realize I am an original buff, and look down on folks who tear up good original Mustangs to make hot rods out of them.
