Default 67 start up

I have a 67 coupe with a 200ci I6, and was wondering if anyone could tell me why I struggle to start the damn thing up. Even if its been sitting 12 hours, I need to turn the key and pump the gas for about 3 minutes, otherwise the engine wont crank. I know someone here has an answer for me, also i have new spark plugs and the starter is fine. Ask me questions if you don't know what I'm talking about. Thanks in advance!

for the whole 3min you try starting it, it won't even pop or attempt to run at all?

OR

does it try to start then die?

starts but after 3 seconds or so, it dies. Then i turn the key again, pump more and hope it stays running. If not, i do it all over again. I just want it so i turn the key and it starts, like it used to.

choke is messed up or not installed or not being properly used.

Take the air cleaner off and look at the choke plate.

You can ID the choke plate because it sits above everything is the first sold flat piece of metal inside the carb barrel that covers the primary butterfly valves...

is yours set up like the one in this photo where the choke plate actuator arm connects to that round back thing?

I'll take a look later, but I figured it had to be a problem with the carburetor. thanks, if it is the choke, what adjustments do I need to make?

well when the engine is cold the choke should cover about 60 to 75% of the barrel. Inside that black cylinder that connects to the choke arm is a bimetallic strip that as heated will pull the choke open.

First step is to push the gas to the floor then check the choke plate if it doesnt cover most of the barrel loosen the screws that hold the round black cover and twist the cover until it starts to close the choke keep twisting until you get 70% coverage then tighten the screws. Mark its original location first and if twisting doesn't move the choke try twisting the other way.

If neither direction moves the choke pull the black housing off and see if they strip is broken or if the pin that engages the choke actuator rod has slipped out of its keeper on the end of the bimetallic strip.

If it is stock probably an autolite 1100. I had problems like this before I upgraded to the 2bbl.

My car sat for 18 years, so I had the carb rebuilt by Pony Carbs. It starts first time almost every time. It's not cheap, but totally worth the money to know the carb is like new and adjusted correctly.

take the air cleaner off and open the choke by hand, the work the throttle linkage a few times and see if its pumping gas. if its pumping gas the the accelerator is ok but you might want to make sure the choke plate isnt completely closed. if it is you could try to put a screwdriver in between the butterfly to hold it open some. thats whta it sounds like to me, accelerator pump or choke stuck close. if the accelerator pump is bad, or clogged, you would have to pump it a lot because it wouldnt be pumping much, if any, gas while your doing it.
