Default 289 Running Hot.. Please HELP......

I have posted a couple times with a 289 running hot. Trust me all the external things have been checked and the latest update is.....

I used a thermal gun yesterday and the left side header was around 250, but the right side header got to 500+.. One spot was close to 800 and was beaming red. The top radiator hose was 165ish and the bottom 145ish. If you are familiar with the lengthy posting i have (i think on the 2nd page entitled **1968 289 RUNNING HOT**) you will know I have also flattened a new edlebrock cam. Makes me wonder if it is not in the head. Valve train or something. If the valve springs aren't the correct pd then that could be flattening the cam.

Like i said it is on one side and EXTREMELY hot..
I'm calling the machine shop back tomorrow and probably going to take the motor out for the 3rd time so they can make it right. This time they'll re-magniflux the heads.

THANKS FOR THE HELP.....

I can't remember if you can install small block head and or intake gaskets backwards but that would be my first guess. It's also a good bet that the head that got to 800 degrees will need to be resurfaced (if it's not cracked). As for the cam (I'm assuming it's a flat tappet) failure, I've been reading alot of horror stories lately. Something that keeps getting mentioned is to make sure you use an oil that contains zinc when you break-in the cam.

If not, then I wish you good luck.

My original reply wasn't meant to cause any "extra" work.
It really is necessary in a case such as yours.

[sm=icon_guiness.gif] One thing bad about the 'ol 289's is the fact that the head gasket can fit PERFECTLY backwards on your block...causing coolant flow blockage. Go with w/what "69FECoupe" told ya...
