Default new guy with a few questions

Hey guys, just brought my 'new' 66 289 home today. cars in pretty good condition for a michigan car. minor rust and floor pans done by previous owner. need help with starting and keeping her running. battery test good. car will not start without a jump by connecting positive to the starter soleniod and grounding to the battery, im assuming new battery cables are in order along with cleaning battery post. once started car idles good and strong, can rev it as well. once put in gear (c4 auto) car will start to spudder and die. im lost on this one... is this a carb issue or is there something else? and where do you guys suggest to get a good quality set of battery cables? thanks and pics to follow soon...

If I were you id just pick up some cables at the nearest auto parts store Unless you want it original..

Now for the carb.. The best thing to do is get a vacuum gauge (about 15 bucks at harbor freight tools) and hook it up to a manifold vac port on your intake.

First, to get her running in gear(and probably driving too) you can adjust the curb idle screw on the accelerator linkage on the pass. side of the carb. The increase in engine speed will keep her going when the drive line tries to load it down. Then using the two small mixture screws you can adjust the fuel/air mix at idle while in gear to get the max vacuum you can.

A big thing to remember when adjusting those is to make the adjustments equally or she wont like it.. So you may have to screw the needles all the way in at first (with the car off) and then back them out about 1.5 full turns each to get a good even start on tuning. If its an autolite 2100d (2 bbl) carb, the idle mix screws are both in front pointing forward just under where the air cleaner sits.

Dont be scared to get in there and fiddle with it. The guys here are more than willing to walk you through a tune one step at a time if needed. (Ask me how I know.lol)

Welcome to the forum! Congrats on the new car!

If you were in the UP we could have it running in a couple hours. Hard to diagnose problems online, but they are on the right track. Carb, timing, and electrical connections.

I think the electric portion may be the solenoid, swap it out, it's cheap.
