you might just need to change the gear on the cable. what color gear is currently in the T5 and what size wheels do you have in the back?

thats what i was getting at. Sorry for not being clear.

I want to change the cable gear. I have 245 45 17s on the rear and i am running .373 gears in the rear end.

right now my cable has the stock 3spd gear and it does not work at all. I am just now looking to connect it all up.

? i married the original cable I had with the T5 no problem whatsoever. i think the car even came originally with 3.5:1 and my wheel size is quite stockish. so my speedo is correct to 5mph (compared with rpm calculator and satnav)

how are you not getting it in?

There are gear calculators online that you put tire size, diff gear and trans drive gear in(6 or 7, depends on the trans) and it tells you what tooth count you need on the driven gear.

The stock cable should work with that too. Did the speedo work before? It should all just swap over. I usually just get it working with the gear and cable from the old trans then look what gear is on the cable and adjust from there. So if you have a 17T on there now you would need more teeth to compensate for the lower rear end. Try a 18t or a 19t and see how it does.

A transmission shop will be able to get them as well, and most mechanics shops. They're pretty cheap.
