Ram air clearance Question
Ok so my car has factory ram air option. I have a 351c CJ in the car with a Holley 770 street avenger and a MSD dizzy with 8.5 mm wires. Between these two i don't think that there will be enough room to run the ram air cleaner. Anyone have any suggestions, or has anyone run it with a similar set up? Thanks in advance if you can help.
Just run an after-market open element aircleaner. I doubt you'll notice any difference in power. I read somewhere one of the mags found no significant difference between ram-air and open element on a dyno.
I'll bet the dyno runs did account for air temp differences. Ram air implies a very slight pressure diff, colder air on the other hand has been shown to increase hp.
As for fitment issues, all you can do try. It either fits or it don't. If you can manage to get clean outside/cold air vs. underhood/warm air into your carb somehow, go for it.

Well because on a dyno you're sitting still, if you are moving with the flaps wide open your are sucking in 1) a lot more air and 2) the air is much cooler so that will add more power. Not like a blower would obv, but its not just for power that i want it, i just would like to use it since i have the parts and it had it originally.
The flaps are hooked to vacuum and only open when you punch the gas.
This was done purely for macho appeal because you can see them move when
it's punched while sitting there parked in the dealer lot.
You said that the origional setup doesn't fit, so I offered a solution. The aftermarket
aircleaner will still poke up thru the housing and get cold air if you just prop the flaps open.
(it probably would work better with the flaps always open anyway)

Sorry i must have no explained it well enough. I have not tried it yet because i have not yet put the motor back in the car (the car is in the body shop) so i haven't had a chance to hit it. Judging by the size of the new dizzy though it would seem that it would not clear the air cleaner, so i was just asking if anyone had run into this problem as well. Sorry if my question didn't make sense.
which MSD distributor are you using? is it one of the large rhynite base ones? can you exchange to a small base distributor?
i'm assuming you want to retain the ram air because it was a nice option.
i have seen a 71 or 72 with a 429 out there who modified the base with an aftermarket intake. do you have any welding skills?
i've experienced a similar situation to yours.

Here are some pictures so you can get an idea of the size of the dizzy vs the carb etc. I do have welding skills, and own several welders, what are you thinking? I am using a Weiand aluminum intake as well if that will help, no spacer plate though.

Hope this helps.

i feel your pain!
i think you are going to have to investigate different distributors. i'm running a pro-billet that has a much smaller diameter. mine does appear to sit taller than a stock distributor.
my app was different (69 shaker, 351W, victor jr), but fundamentally the same problem.
the pro-billet i have is a little taller to clear the victor junior. so i had to add some clearance to the indentation on the base. (not to mention the many mods to the base's internals.
you are going to have to install to see where you're at. the intake may have changed the geometry of everything.
here is an example...
