Default Ford AOD behind the FE

Okay, I really want to drop in an AOD behind by C6 in my 1969 Fastback, but the current option is almost three thousand dollars from Gear Vendors. There is a company that makes an adapter to bolt the Ford AOD behind the FE series engine for about eight hundred dollars. Going that route would save me about grand over the GV route.

But, has anyone here done the adapter route with the Ford AOD? If so, do you have any pics? How was the adapter to body clearance? Thanks, Bruce

No, the AOD has the same 302/351w bell housing bolt pattern. That's why it bolted to your 302. However, the bell housing bolt pattern for the FE is completely different. The FE pattern is rounded. So the two are not compatible. Bruce

I guess I should clarify. My Fastback has a factory 428 FE engine. Hence the reason I have to use an adapter if I go with the AOD. And why I am looking for some information for this particular swap. Sorry if there was any confusion. Bruce

Give Performance Automatics a call. The owners name is Harvey. If you can talk to him, ask him because he make an AOD that will work behind your FE. Tell him you know the Crazy Chinaman Randy who used to work at B&M. You might get a discount.

The AOD bellhousing can be removed (cut/machined) and replaced by an aftermarket bell (JW is one). This is the best route IMO. I'm sure someone makes an adapter plate system but in my experience they have been problematic. These folks may offer some help. www.clickclickracing.com

While you are at it, you will need to make sure the AOD can handle the big block torque which is much more that a stock 302/351 produced, you will need a crossmember for the AOD, you will need an appropriate length driveshaft, and you will need a way to connect the TV Cable to the carb (not a kickdown cable like the C4/C6).

Thanks for chipping in guys. I have looked at the Bendtsen adapter, the JW bell housing, and have exchanged emails with Performance Automatics. I kinds like the latter two options.

The measurement from the front of the bell to the rear trans mount on the AOD when compared to the C6 is exactly a 1/16" of an inch difference. So, I should not have to worry about the crossmember. Lokar makes a nice TV cable kit for the AOD in retro fit applications. The drive line will need some work.

But, has anyone done any of these installs and do they have any pics. I don't want to be ginny pig if you know what I mean. Bruce

Okay, I called JW today and they DON'T have an Ultra Bell to mate the AOD to the FE and don't have one planned either. Performance Automatic wants $4100.00 for their converted AOD to FE transmission. And that's their base line model. WAY too much money. So that leaves the Bendtsen adapter if I want to use a fortified AOD behind the FE. Or stay with the C6 and the GV unit. Which puts me about five hundred short of the Performance Automatic's transmission. I think I may end up going withe the adapter and the AOD. If anyone has some pics of this install in a 67-70 Mustang with the FE please shootem to me. Thanks, Bruce
