Default Alarm System

I haven't seen it mentioned before, so I though I would ask. Where is a good place to mount the "brain" for car alarm in our classic Stangs? I'm more interested in 65-66, but am interested in what anyone has to say.

I installed mine on the passengers side between the heater box and radio. The fuses I made so I can access from under the dash. from under the dash you cant see it without a flashlight.

I put mine in the trunk. The face has some adjustment screws and switches, plus I have a ton of stuff hooked up to it with relays etc. so made it cleaner install. If is was more basic I would have tucked it under the dash.

I made a panel to mount it where the dash speaker went, it worked out well.

My 2 cents, alarms are crap and give you false sense of security. They are annoying and do not stop car thieves. The best deterent for thieves is to always park in your garage with your 44 Magnum under your pillow. If you leave your classic out over night you are asking for trouble. I would not spend a dime on an alarm but I would put out some money for a lojack. At least then you stand a chance of getting your car back.

I would get full coverage that says cost to replace not what its worth.A alarm is only good if the owner hears it and looks out most never do.The mustang didn't get a locking column tell what 69.The wing windows are easy to jimmy open with a screw driver.I park mine in my garage when im not driving it and i made a fake coil wire for it.Just take a old coil wire and gut out the wire in the middle it won't start and they won't mess with it.Or even take the rotor out of the dizzy works too.

My car is always in a garage at night and I have full coverage for agreed value. I was actually considering something like LoJack.

I know that some car alarms can be annoying when they are over sensative. The one in my truck is not that sensitive at all. Its only gone off during a thunderstorm once. When its in a parking garage which is hardly ever, I disable the shock sensor. It also has a motion sensor too.

I know that alarms arent fool proof, but I figure anything I can do to protect my car is a good idea. I just want to deter people from fooling with it. A couple times a month it is parked outside different friends houses in the late evening and I figure it will deter some vandalz etc. I also would feel better when I leave it unattanded for short periods of time like at a restaraunt etc.

It also has starter disable. I might get an insurance discount too. I know I did on my truck.

Thanks for the ideas everyone. I was thinking about putting it near the glove box. I may go that route.

Mounting it in the dash speaker provision is a good idea, but I have speakers there.

I had thought about putting it in the trunk, but then I would have to route a lot of wires back to the front.

To answer the question about what brand. I like Code Alarm, Viper, and Clifford.

Something I have heard from both police friends and car alarm installers is that a blinking LED on the dash is just as effective, with a price and footprint that can't be beat. any thief that would be deterred by an alarm will see the blinking light and move on, and if someone was willing to ignore the alarm's noise, like 99% of everyone else does, at least you wouldn't be bothering the neighbors. gps is getting so cheap that lojack and its competitors are getting pretty nice also. One thing I am looking at doing is installing a ground sensing circuit as a cutoff to the car's ground. its a very cheap kit, with a valet switch you can hide under a false bottom in the console, trunk, where-ever. you run a wire to a metal stud or screw that is not grounded, and all you have to do is touch it each time you get in, and no amount of monkeying with wires under the dash or the starter will hot wire it.

I agree with you, I can't see how adding an alarm makes it any less safe???

I installed an alarm with a pager in a car I had 10yrs. ago, pager went off while I was 2 houses away at a friends - got to the car in <10sec. to find legs sticking out of my broken window. The broken window cost me a lot less than his hospital visit and jail time, worthwhile trade for me...
He was planning on tearing everything he could out of the interior for his same model car or jacking the car if he could, he was stopped on both counts.

The range of the pager alarms has since increased, it comes with a transmitting antennae usually. I plan to put one in my car when running again, I find it perfect for those 'I'm close to my car but can't see it' locations.

I didn't think about the trunk for the brain, I'll probably do that since I'm putting the battery there. Also have a double hood lock set up so they won't be able to get to the engine easily, harder it is to steal/break into the better chance they'll move on.
Just my .02
Jon
