1967 289 Engine Reassembly
Me and my father pulled the engine on my 67 Coupe a couple years ago and dissembled it to a long block and sent it off and had it rebuild. My father doesn't remember how to reassemble the front of the engine, such as what bolts and studs go where. So I was hoping somebody on here would have the manual for this engine to help us get the engine reassemble and put back in the vehicle because I've been working on this car for 4 years and been working on getting the engine back in for two of those years and I would really like to have something better then my dads 82 Bronco for the summer. So Thanks in Advance.
i wouldn't know any manual, but i'm positive someone can recommend one
the problem is always to remember bolts after 3 months. If I disassemble for long term again I'll make sure to bag the bolts and label them.
I assume you already have a gasket set for the engine.
The bolts are easy if you still have them.
The timing cover goews to the front of the engine and on top of that you sit the waterpump. If unsure about the bolts or missing I'm quite sure you can get a bolt kit quite cheap

The timing cover and water pump arrangement varies slightly among the early years. Some of the bolts go through the timing cover AND the water pump while other bolts only pass through the timing cover. Still some of the other bolts only bolt the water pump to the timing cover and do not pass through to the block.
I would suggest laying the timing cover out on the bench and start dropping bolts through to see which is which. You want the bolt head sticking up a distance of about five threads. Also there may be a bolt that does not merely have a head, but has a stud on the end above the hex. This would be for a power steering or alternator bracket.
Do you have the eccentric for the fuel pump in place? Make sure it is in place before putting the timing cover and water pump in place.
Also, remember that there are some bolts coming up through the pan to the timing cover so don't forget them. Also during assembly you should have the new timing cover seal in place in the timing cover. Put all the bolts in place but don't tighten down until the harmonic balancer is pulled into position to center the seal before tightening the bolts. You usually can get by without doing this seal centering step, but I have seen these seals leak as a result of ignoring this step.
Just take your time and mock everything up including alternator and any accessories such as P/S pump and A/C compressor.
If you get really stumped, maybe someone with specifically a 67 289 with the same accessories can make a few digital pictures for you. The only 289 I have is a 64 with a generator and no power steering so I don't think it would help you.
Good luck and just make up your mind that you are going to get it together and dive into it.
