Default Need some advice on a restoration project!

Alright guys, let me start off saying my experience in minimal. I've been working on a 1987 Jeep Wrangler YJ for a few months now and I'm done with what I wanted to do. Now I want to move on to a car I've always admired, the 1967 Mustang. While I'd love a fast back model, the one I'm looking at is a coupe. I come here asking if I should dive in on this project. I'm certainly willing to work for it, and I'll have a summer job to help pay for it.

Here's the mustang I'm looking at:

Description: 1967 MUSTANG COUPE 289 4 BARRELL AUTOMATIC . CAR IS COMPLETE HAS SOME RUST .HAVE NEW FENDERS. $800

Yessir, that's $800 for a 1967 Mustang Coupe. Now, theres not many pictures, and when I called the guy he said he hadn't started it in years, so I'm going into expecting to have to replace the engine and possible transmission. He also mentioned it has the stock hood with the built in turn signals, an added plus I'd say.
And I'm going tomorrow to meet the guy and take a look at it, especially the interior and rust damage.

Now, with all that said, what do you guys think? You guys are the experts here, and I'd love to hear any and all opinions. Just know I'm ready to dive in and know what I'm in for.

Thanks,
HT

P.S.: If I'm indecisive friday, I will take pictures and upload them for you guys to check them out.

Well first off just because the motor hasn't run in years doesn't mean that it has to be replaced. It could fire right up with some basic changes. Or worst case it needs to be rebuild, but still not replaced. AS for the transmission i would change the fluid and filter and see if she drives if she doesn't shift rebuild it or have it replaced what ever is cheaper. When you got to look at it look for rust in the usual places. Floor pans, trunk floor, quarters, aprons, tail light panel etc. If there is minimal to no rust and the car is complete that $800 is a hell of a deal in my opinion. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Yeah that's mainly the words my dad is try to hammer into my head. He's convinced that I'm gonna get screwed with this, and that everything (engine, trans, etc.) will need replacing, but I highly doubt that. And like you said, it could just need a little tweaking, worst case a rebuild, and it might run well.

Since it might not run I'm probably gonna get a wrecker to take it back to the shop because I know the guy who owns the shop, and he said he'd check it out with me for free.

If it's complete, it's worth $800 unless it is a rusted out hulk that was exported to Georgia from the rust belt.

Well, I talked to my old man tonight and he's gonna check it out with me tomorrow afternoon. I'll try to take pics, whether I buy it or not, so you guys can see it as well.

That sounds like a good deal to me too. Hopefully it doesn't have much rust damage underneath. I also agree that the motor may be fine. It may just need fresh fluids, a tune up and a new carb to get it to run.

Well damn, I called the guy this morning to get his address and he already sold it.
Kinda sold it out from under me, since he promised to let me check it out today, but not everything works out the way we want it to, I guess! Well, my search for another mustang continues! haha

Been there done that! With old cars, especially at a cheap price, if you want it, BUY IT! They won't wait on you forever, sometimes not even an hour or two. Unfortunately in todays USA very few people, especially strangers, are good for their word on a handshake. When I was growing up most men's handshakes were as good as a 100 page, lawyer tight contract. No more.
