Default Was this clutch bad?

i had some BAD clutch chatter in my toploader so i pulled it and took some pictures. the actual clutch disc looked fine and so did the springs.

the pressure plate seems to have some hot spots if you look at the top left corner

it looks fine wear wise with the exception of one hot spot on the pressure plate..I can still see the machine marks on it.

Does it look like any oil could have got on the clutch disc?

Does it look like there is any oil anywhere on the pressure plate or surrounding components?

Did you use the little bag of lube on the throwout (clutch release) bearing? My clutch package came with a little bag of lube....not sure if that could be it.

Maybe not enough pedal free play? (out of adjustment?)

The clutch itself looks ok in the pics, looks like it got hot once or twice, but I am not seenig any damage.

Sometimes when a clutch is slipped it will "burnish" the disk and this can lead to 'clatter'.

Although the plate and flywheel don't look terribly bad, sometimes you will get chatter that is almost unexplainable. Did you surface the flywheel when you did the clutch job? Binding in the linkage can also cause chattering.

If it were me and I had it apart, I would do everything even though it's all relatively new. Use a quality clutch set and surface the flywheel. In this case it is the only way to go unless you enjoy taking it apart and putting it back together.

it was new when put in and i just got a new setup as well.
Zoom clutch and a Ram flywheel

im only making aobut 230 wheel horse so i dont need a super duty clutch. i've had some drag time on the old setup though. probably 20 passes or so.

What gears are you running and what engine setup? Tall gears with an engine that needs more clutch leaving a stop can result in chatter.

Hmmm....a 3.25 with a Toploader COULD cause chatter on some clutches depending on the engine setup. It'd depend on the clutch though, some will chatter where others won't. I've found Centerforce Dual Frtictions that I run are highly resistant to chatter. If there's nothing wrong with the clutch/linkage and the clutch is clean, it may be the clutch itself in combination with your gearing.

If a clutch chatters, regardless of gearing, there's something wrong. Since the clutch has seen a number of drag strip launches, all bet's are off.

If you plan on drag strip launches, you need to get a clutch and associated components designed for such abuse. Stock components will have a very short life with ANY amount of horsepower. Go for those $300 and $400 packages.
